I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the studio lately playing with a modern twist on the art of the scroll. It’s amazing how a simple strip of paper, when coiled and shaped just right, can completely transform a flat stamped image into something that feels alive.
What I love most about this technique is that “wow factor.” It’s clean, it’s graphic, and it adds a tactile dimension that you just can’t achieve with ink alone. It’s the kind of project that makes you want to reach out and run your fingers over the design as soon as you see it.
Elevating Your Stamp Sets
The beauty of modern quilling is how it pairs with the stamps we already have. For these designs, I reached for some Stampin’ Up! Australia favourites. I used the Leave a Little Sparkle unicorn for a 3D rainbow mane, the Sailing Home lighthouse for textured waves, and the elegant silhouette from Wonderful Moments for a flowing, dimensional dress. Even a simple strawberry from Filled with Sweetness looks fresh with a few quilled leaves.
Once you learn the basic technique of coiling and shaping, the applications are endless. You aren’t tied to a specific pattern; instead, you get to look at your stamps and think, “Where could I add a little scroll here to make it pop?”
