Nostalgia and Newborns: Hand-Stitched Pocket Babies

I woke up feeling a little bit nostalgic today. Do you ever have those mornings where you just want to go back to your roots? For me, that means revisiting my Rudolf Steiner background and the simple, natural toys that spark so much imagination.

With Spring finally showing its face around Melbourne, it felt like the perfect time to create these “wee baby buntings.” There is something about the change in season that makes me want to make things that feel soft, gentle, and new.

Tiny Treasures in Sinamay Pods

These little dolls are quite dear to my heart. They come as a pair, one in a soft pink and one in a bright blue, each tucked into their own little protective pod.

• The Texture: I decided to make the pods out of sinamay fibre. It has such a lovely, organic texture that contrasts perfectly with the soft felt of the babies.
• The Scale: As you can see by the ruler, they really are tiny! They are the perfect size for very young children to tuck into a pocket and carry around as a little secret friend throughout the day.
• The Details: I kept the faces simple and added a tiny flower embellishment and a gingham bow to finish them off. If I were a little girl again, I know exactly where these would be: resting right next to my pillow every single night.

A Different Kind of Handmade

While I spend most of my time teaching paper crafting and working with scrapbooking supplies, I find that these sewing projects offer a different kind of creative satisfaction. It’s a much more tactile, slow process that really grounds me.
