There is a certain kind of “crafty magic” that happens when you first try heat embossing. Watching a grainy powder transform into a glossy, raised metallic finish right before your eyes is what hooked me on paper crafting years ago!
For this instalment of my Tool of the Month series, I am featuring the slender but mighty Stampin’ Up! Heat Tool. While a paper trimmer is the backbone of your projects, this tool is the one that adds that professional, tactile “wow” factor to your handmade cards.

More Than Just a Hairdryer
I often get asked in my craft classes if a hairdryer can do the same job. Unfortunately, a hairdryer blows too much air and doesn’t get quite hot enough. To melt embossing powder effectively, you need a concentrated, high-heat source that won’t blow your powder all over the room!
The Stampin’ Up! Heat Tool is designed specifically for crafters. It is slim, easy to hold, and surprisingly quiet. If you want to see it in action, I have used it to create some elegant textures in my Forever Fern Card and shared some rugged, outdoor-themed techniques in my Campology Card Inspiration post. Both of these include videos so you can see exactly how I move the tool to get that perfect melt!
Features I Love
- Two Heat Settings: This is a huge benefit for me. I use the lower setting for gently drying wet ink or watercolour, while the high setting is perfect for melting embossing powder quickly.
- Sleek Design: It feels more like holding a large pen than a bulky hardware tool, which gives me much better control when I am working on delicate stamping techniques.
- Safety First: I appreciate the protective plastic tip that covers the hot metal nozzle and the integrated wire stand that lets me set it down safely on my desk while it cools.
Join Me for a Workshop in Oakleigh South
If you have been curious about heat embossing but feel a little intimidated by the process, why not come and try it out? Using a heat tool is one of those things that is much easier to learn when you see it done in person.
I host monthly card making workshops in Oakleigh South, where I provide all the scrapbooking supplies and tools you need. It is a fantastic opportunity for locals in Mulgrave, Clayton, and Bentleigh to get hands-on experience with professional equipment before adding it to their own collections.
